Stryker Uses Apple Vision Pro for Landmark Hip Arthroscopy at Duke Health

Stryker, a medical technology firm, announced that its Apple Vision Pro application facilitated a milestone hip arthroscopy at Duke Health. The SportSuite Vision software, authorized by the FDA on July 17, was utilized in the procedure, representing its inaugural deployment in clinical practice.

The event highlights a potential real-world application for Apple’s mixed-reality headset, which has long been viewed as a device awaiting the right professional niche. Unlike consumer-focused scenarios, complex surgeries allow medical professionals to navigate both the physical environment and digital overlays simultaneously.

During the operation, the surgeon accessed Stryker’s orthopedic planning tools, arthroscopic video feeds, and CT imaging while maintaining visibility of the patient. Dr. Chad Mather III, the orthopedic surgeon who performed the procedure, noted that spatial computing allowed him to tailor clinical information to his workflow within the sterile field, creating a more efficient operating room setup.

Despite this success, widespread adoption in primary care settings remains unlikely due to the headset’s high price point and development complexities. This development comes amid reports that Apple recently reduced staff on its Vision Pro team. Nevertheless, this surgical application demonstrates how specialized professional use cases could help the Vision Pro achieve its long-term potential.
