Wells Urges Coalition, Greens to Support Stricter Social Media Ban Laws

Communications Minister Anika Wells has issued a direct challenge to both the Coalition and the Greens, urging them to support legislation that would significantly expand the eSafety Commissioner’s authority to enforce the social media ban for children under 16.

The proposed law aims to strengthen information-gathering powers, allowing regulators to more effectively investigate non-compliance by social media companies. Additionally, the maximum penalty for breaches would be doubled to nearly $110 million. Labor is currently working to secure the passage of this legislation through Parliament this week.

Minister Wells highlighted the delays encountered since the Albanese government introduced urgent measures over two months ago. She criticized the Coalition and Greens for sending the four-page bill to an eight-week inquiry, arguing that Australian families had needed these protections weeks prior.
