Volvo Doubles Electric Range in 2028 XC60 and XC90 Plug-In Hybrid Refresh

Volvo has announced updated versions of its popular XC60 and XC90 SUVs, introducing a major enhancement to their plug-in hybrid systems. The Swedish automaker revealed the refreshed models on the same day as the revised XC40, signaling a strong push for upgrades across its lineup in Gothenburg.

The most significant change lies under the hood: the new plug-in hybrid powertrain more than doubles the real-world electric-only range compared to previous iterations. While exterior styling modifications remain relatively subtle, the engineering improvements aim to address consumer demand for longer EV capabilities.

As one of Volvo’s best-selling vehicles globally, with over 2.7 million XC60 units sold by the end of last year, the model holds substantial importance for the brand. Visual updates include redesigned “Thor’s Hammer” headlights that retain their signature daytime running light pattern but now incorporate matrix LED projectors. Additional aesthetic changes involve a narrower front grille, revised bumpers, and adjustments to side panels.

Inside the cabin, Volvo is offering a new ventilated leather interior option. The infotainment system has been upgraded to an 11.2-inch display powered by Android Automotive OS, featuring a Gemini personal assistant for conversational voice control. Early testing suggests the new AI assistant performs considerably better than earlier versions, which had reportedly declined in responsiveness over recent years.

  1. So basically a mild hybrid with bigger batteries. Still not a true EV, but a significant step in the right direction.

  2. Doubling the electric range is a game-changer for daily commuters. Finally, I can forget the gas engine entirely.
