Valve Still Determining ‘How and When’ for Steam Deck 2

Valve Still Determining ‘How and When’ for Steam Deck 2

With the release of its full 2026 hardware slate—including the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame—speculation has mounted regarding the future of the Steam Deck. However, Valve designer Pierre-Loup Griffais stated in an interview with IGN that the company has not yet finalized plans for a successor.

Griffais noted that Valve is currently assessing “how and when” it can deliver a next-generation handheld device. The studio has maintained for years that while a Steam Deck 2 is in development, it will not launch until the company identifies the optimal processing chip.

The original Steam Deck succeeded by balancing price, performance, and battery efficiency. According to Valve, any future iteration must maintain this same level of efficiency rather than sacrificing power consumption for raw speed.

  1. Patience pays off. Better to wait for the right silicon than get another incremental upgrade with worse battery life.
