Supreme Court Blocks Trump Administration’s Mail-In Voting Restrictions

The Supreme Court on Monday denied the Trump administration’s bid to impose new restrictions on mail-in voting, thereby maintaining a lower court order that blocks the U.S. Postal Service from implementing the changes. The decision preserves the status quo as states prepare for the upcoming midterm elections.

In its ruling, the Court stated that the government was unlikely to succeed on the merits of its challenge against the District Court’s preliminary injunction. The decision ensures that states can continue to distribute mail-in ballots according to their existing plans without interference from the new federal regulations.

President Donald Trump, who has frequently asserted unfounded claims regarding widespread mail ballot fraud, had pushed for a policy requiring states to provide the USPS with basic voter information. Under the proposed rules, each mail-in ballot would be attached to a unique barcode containing the recipient’s name and home address. Postal workers would then be authorized to deliver only those ballots addressed to voters appearing on lists provided by the states.

While the Trump administration argued that the regulations would impose only “modest” requirements regarding ballot design and review, Democratic-led states and voter advocacy groups have strongly opposed the move. Critics contend that the regulations represent an attempt to federalize elections, which are traditionally managed at the state level, and argue that the new protocols would create unnecessary barriers for everyday citizens voting by mail.

The Court’s intervention comes as the legal dispute over postal voting procedures intensifies ahead of the November general election. With the emergency appeal rejected, the lower court’s block remains in effect, preventing the USPS from enforcing the barcode and voter list requirements in time for the midterms.

  1. This is a huge win for voting access. Keeping the status quo ensures people aren’t blocked from casting ballots in November.
