USS Abraham Lincoln Returns to San Diego After Record 321-Day Deployment

The USS Abraham Lincoln arrived back at Naval Base San Diego on Thursday, concluding a deployment of 321 days—the longest for an aircraft carrier in recent Navy history. The ship brought home more than 4,500 sailors and Marines who had spent over 10 months at sea, including significant time supporting U.S. operations against Iran in the Middle East.

Emotional reunions took place along the pier in Coronado as hundreds of family members waited in the sun to greet the crew. Sailors lined the decks during the approach, and once released from attention, they immediately began contacting loved ones. Among the heartfelt moments was McKenzie Adkins, who held her 10-week-old son, Declan, while waving to her husband, Alexander, aboard the ship, marking the infant’s first meeting with his father.

During its tenure, the Lincoln carrier strike group logged more than 250 consecutive days at sea before departing the Middle East in late August. The vessel made stops in Thailand and Guam before returning to its home port. It was replaced in the region by the USS George Washington, which is based in Japan.

The extended deployment drew intense scrutiny regarding living conditions aboard the carrier. Reports emerged of supply shortages and faulty plumbing, while families raised alarms about declining mental health among the crew. Eight suicide attempts were reported on the ship, prompting Congressional Democrats to demand answers from the Navy. The Pentagon has defended the conditions experienced by the crew.
