Surviving Execution Leaves Christa Pike With Cognitive Challenges Despite Physical Gains

Lawyers for Christa Pike stated Thursday that the Tennessee death row inmate has experienced a “remarkable physical recovery” since regaining consciousness following a botched lethal injection execution, but she continues to struggle with serious cognitive and psychological challenges.

Stephen Ferrell, an attorney with Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee, told ABC News that while Pike’s physical condition is improving, there remains significant uncertainty regarding her long-term cognitive health. “She’s clearly cognitively not quite back to normal and may have a long ways to go,” Ferrell said, noting that Pike is also enduring substantial psychological trauma from the events of Sept. 30.

Pike, the only woman on Tennessee’s death row, was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. She survived two doses of pentobarbital administered during the attempted execution in Nashville, an event the Death Penalty Information Center described as “the worst we’ve ever seen and unlike any other botched execution in the modern era.”

After initially requiring a ventilator, Pike woke up on Tuesday, surprising medical staff who believed she was brain dead and were preparing to withdraw life support. Randy Spivey, another of her attorneys, said he believes her first words upon waking were, “Where am I and who are you?” Spivey added that Pike appears “angry and confused” and continues to exhibit cognitive disorientation.

Medical professionals indicated that it could take months to determine if Pike has sustained permanent cognitive injuries. Her legal team reported that she has difficulty with concentration and memory, often losing her train of thought mid-sentence. Despite these challenges, Ferrell noted that Pike is thinking about the family of her victim and the trauma they have endured.

Physically, Pike is walking with assistance in her hospital room and has resumed eating, though her team emphasized that her road to recovery will be long. She is currently being treated for pneumonia and a blood clot in her arm. Additionally, she suffers from severe burns at the injection sites, which have caused significant swelling in her arms and hands. Ferrell explained that the burns were severe enough to make it difficult for Pike to hold a pen or sign documents.

In response to the failed execution, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has paused all scheduled executions in the state. Lee also appointed former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton to lead an independent review of the Department of Correction’s protocol. This follows the resignation of Corrections Commissioner Frank Strada shortly after the incident.

Pike’s attorneys have petitioned Gov. Lee to commute her sentence to life imprisonment without parole. Concurrently, a Davidson County Chancery Court judge granted an emergency motion to preserve all physical, written, and electronic evidence related to the execution attempt.

The Tennessee Department of Correction confirmed Pike remains hospitalized but declined to provide specific medical details due to federal privacy laws.

  1. Does this not prove the death penalty is flawed? The state tried to kill her and failed catastrophically. Why keep the sentence at all?

  2. It is horrifying that her cognitive damage may be permanent. Surviving such a botched execution shouldn’t feel like a gift when she faces lifelong impairment.
