US Withdraws All Bombers from RAF Fairford Following Terror Investigation

The United States has confirmed the removal of all its bomber aircraft from RAF Fairford, returning them to their home stations in America. A statement from a US department official was released on Sunday, marking the latest development in a counter-terrorism investigation centred on the British military base.

The withdrawal follows a significant incident on 27 September, when authorities were alerted to three “suspicious vehicles” operating near the airbase in Gloucestershire. While Washington has not explicitly linked the pullout to this event, Whitehall sources indicate the decision was a direct response. It is understood to have been a military, rather than political, determination made at the operational level and communicated by US forces to their British counterparts.

UK counter-terrorism police arrested five men, aged between 23 and 25 and all British nationals from London, in the early hours of the morning following reports of the vehicles heading toward the base. They were initially held on suspicion of explosives offences and later for preparing a terrorist act. Authorities later released the group on bail, describing the move as an “investigative decision” based on experience and strategy.

A sixth suspect, aged 25, was taken into custody in London on Thursday on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. Counter-terrorism police confirmed on Saturday that he too has been released on bail.

Prior to these bail decisions, Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated there were “strong indications” of Iranian involvement in the incident, though he offered no further specifics. Tehran has firmly denied any role. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News that the episode “clearly involve[d] the hands of a foreign actor,” while President Donald Trump expressed surprise at the UK’s decision to release the initial five detainees.

RAF Fairford has served as a forward operating location for the US Air Force for decades. In recent months, it has been used for takeoffs targeting the Middle East after the UK approved defensive strikes against Iran. Last July, Iran warned that any base utilized for aggression against its territory would be considered a legitimate target.

The UK Ministry of Defence has not issued a comment regarding the current status of the base or the bomber withdrawal.

3 responses to “US Withdraws All Bombers from RAF Fairford Following Terror Investigation”

  1. Iran has explicitly warned about these bases before. This feels less like a random probe and more like a targeted response to recent strikes.

  2. Trump’s surprise at the UK releasing suspects is telling. Does the US think we should have kept them locked up indefinitely instead?

  3. I’m surprised by the speed of this withdrawal. It seems like a significant escalation in tensions over what happened near Fairford.
