Tips to Boost Your iPhone Call Quality

When your iPhone is not serving as a media player or camera, its primary function is often making calls, making clear audio quality essential. If you are experiencing issues such as muffled sounds, metallic tones, or calls cut by background noise, there are several steps you can take to address the problem.

Most call quality issues stem from weak signal strength, outdated carrier settings, or physical barriers like walls or metallic phone cases. During a call, you can try several immediate fixes. First, verify your volume settings and ensure speaker mode is enabled if needed. Additionally, check your signal bars; if they are low, moving closer to a window or an open area may improve connectivity.

iPhone XR and newer models running iOS 16.4 or later offer a feature called Voice Isolation. This feature uses machine learning to reduce environmental noise, ensuring your voice is clearer to the person on the other end. To activate it, swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center, tap the Phone Controls banner, and select Voice Isolation under Audio & Video in the Mic Mode section. You can also choose Automatic mode, which adjusts settings based on the environment. Note that these enhancements only affect how others hear you, so if you have trouble hearing the caller, ask them to try similar settings.

To optimize your device for better call performance, consider switching to Wi-Fi Calling. This feature routes your call through a Wi-Fi connection rather than cellular networks, which is beneficial in areas with poor cell reception. Enable this by navigating to Settings > Apps > Phone, tapping Wi-Fi Calling, and turning on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone. Be aware that while Wi-Fi Calling typically handsoff to cellular when you move out of range, this transition is not always seamless.

Another effective step is updating your software. Apple frequently releases patches that can resolve call quality issues. Check for iOS updates in Settings > General > Software Update and look for carrier settings updates in Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt will appear within 15 seconds; tap Update to proceed.

Additional troubleshooting steps include restarting your iPhone to resolve temporary glitches. If your device uses a SIM card, power it down and inspect the tray for dust or a loose fit. Test your microphone using the Voice Memos app to confirm it is functioning correctly. Clean the speaker grill and earpiece with a soft brush, and try removing thick or metallic cases that may interfere with antenna performance. Using speakerphone during calls can also help determine if audio improves.

Bluetooth headphones, including AirPods, operate on the 2.4GHz band, which is shared with many other devices. This network congestion can degrade call quality, so try making calls without headphones to see if audio clarity improves. If you have never used headphones for calls, testing them might reveal better performance compared to the internal microphone.

Hardware issues can also impact call quality. Some iPhone 12 and 12 Pro models have experienced high earpiece failure rates, though Apple has addressed this through a now-closed service program. Older models like the iPhone XR, XS, or 11 with Intel modems may have weaker signal strength. If you suspect a hardware fault, contact Apple support, but be prepared for the possibility of a paid repair session.
