US to Livestream Firing Squad Execution of Fort Hood Shooter

Officials from the Defense Department have confirmed that the federal execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army major responsible for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, will be available as a live broadcast. The announcement was made to the BBC and the Associated Press.

Hasan, who was convicted of murdering 13 people and wounding more than 30 others at the Texas military base, is scheduled to be put to death via firing squad on December 3rd at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. The planned execution was publicly announced earlier this week.

In response to the confirmation, The Verge reached out to major streaming platforms, including YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Meta, Rumble, and Kick, to inquire whether they intend to permit the public broadcast of the event. As of publication, none of the companies had provided a response.

The decision to stream the execution underscores the government’s intent to ensure transparency and public access to the process. The outcome of these inquiries with tech platforms remains unclear as scheduling approaches.

  1. Did they really just decide to livestream an execution? Who is the target audience for this? Truly baffling use of modern technology.

  2. This feels like a twisted celebration of violence rather than transparency. I don’t want my morning coffee interrupted by state-sanctioned killing.
