US Deploys 2,000 Marines to Middle East as Tanker Attacked in Hormuz

The United States has initiated a significant military buildup in the Middle East, deploying approximately 2,000 Marines and multiple carrier strike groups toward Iran. According to a US official speaking to Al Jazeera, the USS Roosevelt strike group and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group departed from San Diego, with the full deployment expected to be completed by November.

Simultaneously, tension escalated in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit chokepoint. UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that a supertanker carrying an estimated 2.5 million barrels of oil was struck by an unidentified projectile. The attack ignited a fire on the vessel as it navigated through the strait.

Amid the escalating military activity, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Tehran has not shied away from dialogue with Washington. He emphasized that Iran remains open to negotiations despite having faced three separate attacks during ongoing talks.

  1. A supertanker hit in the Hormuz strait? That oil supply shock will make gas prices even worse for everyone here. Dangerous timing.

  2. 2,000 Marines is a huge escalation. I just hope Pezeshkian’s talk of dialogue isn’t just empty words while this military buildup continues.
