US and Australia Halt Consular Operations in Brazil Ahead of Sunday Vote

The United States and Australia announced on Thursday that they will suspend consular services in Brazil beginning Friday. The decision comes just two days before Brazilian voters head to the polls for a high-stakes presidential election.

The US State Department stated that the suspension is due to security concerns, though it did not specify the nature of the threats or directly link them to the upcoming vote scheduled for Sunday. Officials said they are working closely with Brazilian counterparts to address the issues.

Australia also confirmed it would close its embassy in Brasilia on Friday. The Australian government cited the US alert as a key factor in its decision and advised its citizens to avoid US diplomatic missions.

The move occurs against a backdrop of heightened tensions in US-Brazil relations. The election is shaping up to be a rematch of the 2022 contest, polling as a statistical tie between incumbent left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and right-wing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

While US President Donald Trump has not officially endorsed a candidate, he stated at the White House that the administration is watching the election closely. Concerns about foreign interference have been raised by Lula and his allies, who point to recent US tariffs and a failed attempt earlier this summer for Washington to send officials to Brazil to discuss electoral integrity.

In late September, US Democratic lawmakers expressed “grave concern” in a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding what they described as coordinated efforts to undermine the Western Hemisphere’s second-largest democracy.

If no candidate secures a majority this Sunday, the race will proceed to a runoff on October 25th. The outcome will significantly influence Brazil’s foreign policy direction in a region where neighboring countries have recently shifted to the right. Former President Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for his role in an attempt to overturn the results of the previous election.

  1. Australia following the US lead is surprising. Do they face similar threats, or just political alignment?

  2. Goodbye to American consulates is a bold move. Hopefully, it does not escalate already tense relations further.
