Analysis indicates that the United States now maintains control or access to more than 100 defence facilities across Australia, a presence that critics describe as a saturation or even a colonisation of the continent’s military infrastructure.
The findings come from new data compiled by the Nautilus Institute and published by Guardian Australia, which maps the extensive reach of US militarisation. According to the report, the US military directly controls 17 facilities on the Australian mainland while holding access rights to an additional 75 installations managed by Australia. Furthermore, US defence corporations have access to 18 other sites.
These operations facilitate a range of activities, including intelligence gathering, satellite data acquisition for targeting, and communications intercepts. The facilities also support training rotations, such as those for 2,500 marines in the Northern Territory during the dry season, and serve as logistics hubs for pre-positioned warfighting assets like Osprey aircraft, weapons, munitions, and fuel.
Strategic observers warn that this deep integration could potentially drag the nation into conflicts in the Pacific against its will.
