Monitor USB ports often go underutilized because their capabilities vary widely between models. Rather than serving the display itself, these ports typically function as a built-in hub, allowing users to connect peripherals like keyboards, mice, webcams, and flash drives. The data from these accessories communicates with the PC through the monitor, streamlining desk setups and reducing cable clutter.

The functionality of these ports depends on the monitor’s architecture. On many displays, the video feed and the USB hub are separate systems. Users may need to connect an HDMI or DisplayPort cable for the image while using a separate USB cable—often a USB-B upstream port—to enable the hub. However, on monitors equipped with USB-C, a single cable can handle video transmission, data communication, and even laptop charging simultaneously.

Internally, the hub operates through two types of connections. Downstream ports are where peripherals are plugged in, while the upstream port sends that data to the computer. It is important to note that a standard HDMI or DisplayPort connection cannot carry USB data; therefore, a dedicated upstream cable is required for the downstream ports to function on non-USB-C monitors.

For optimal use, permanent accessories such as keyboards and mice should remain connected to the monitor’s hub. This is particularly useful for laptop users, as reconnecting the monitor’s upstream link restores connectivity for all attached peripherals at once. Side-mounted ports also offer convenient access for temporary storage devices like flash drives.

While monitor USB ports are handy for external storage, users should be aware of potential speed bottlenecks. Because downstream ports share the bandwidth of the upstream connection, transferring large files may be slower than connecting the drive directly to the computer. Additionally, some monitors allow specific ports to charge devices, though this may continue even when the display is in standby mode, depending on the manufacturer’s settings.

Identical-looking USB-C ports do not guarantee identical performance. Support for standards such as USB 3.2, USB4, and Power Delivery varies by device. On some high-resolution monitors, users may need to choose between prioritizing display quality or data speed. For instance, selecting a high-resolution mode on certain Dell monitors may downshift USB data to USB 2.0 speeds, which can impact the performance of high-bandwidth peripherals like 4K webcams or fast external drives.

If the built-in hub lacks sufficient ports or specific connectivity options like Ethernet, a dedicated USB-C hub remains a viable solution. However, for standard desk peripherals, utilizing the monitor’s integrated USB ports can significantly reduce the need for additional adapters and cables.
