Slate Truck Prioritizes Low Cost Over Long Range, Offering 205-Mile EV Option

Michigan-based Slate Auto is betting that price will drive the next wave of electric vehicle adoption. The startup has introduced the Blank Slate, a minimalist and customizable EV available as both a truck and an SUV, with a base price of just $24,950. This positions the vehicle as an affordable alternative in a market where the average new car costs exceed $50,000.

While the vehicle omits traditional amenities like automatic windows and built-in speakers, it emphasizes personalization through over 200 optional accessories and a wide array of vinyl-wrap exterior colors. Slate markets the vehicle as America’s most affordable truck, hoping its DIY appeal will attract buyers willing to sacrifice luxury for cost savings.

Performance specifications for the truck include a 135 kW rear-mounted motor producing 181 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds. These figures are comparable to those of the 2026 Ford Maverick. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in approximately eight seconds, matching the pace of Ford’s affordable hybrid competitor.

The truck’s 63 kWh battery pack provides an estimated range of 205 miles, which is notably lower than many EV truck rivals that offer between 280 and 450 miles. However, Slate states this limitation is intentional. The company describes its design philosophy as focusing on practical, everyday driving that balances range with affordability, efficiency, and capability.

According to the manufacturer, the smaller battery reduces both weight and cost, allowing the vehicle to handle daily commutes, weekend trips, and rural driving without frequent charging stops. Slate cites data from Consumer Affairs indicating the average driver travels 37 miles per day, suggesting the 205-mile range will meet the needs of most customers at a lower price point.
