Luxembourg authorities have launched an investigation after unauthorized drone activity compelled the closure of the country’s primary international airport overnight. Prime Minister Luc Frieden confirmed on Saturday that the nation is coordinating with NATO allies in response to the incident, which has intensified concerns across Europe regarding potential hybrid warfare tactics linked to Russia.
Luxair reported that more than 1,800 travelers were impacted by the disruption. Seventeen incoming flights were rerouted to alternative destinations, including airports in Brussels, Paris, and Frankfurt. While operations resumed on Saturday, the airline cautioned that passengers could still face delays and further logistical complications.
The airport authority described the suspension as a necessary precaution to safeguard passengers, airline crews, ground staff, and aircraft. During a televised press conference following an emergency gathering with the interior and defense ministers, Frieden emphasized that it was premature to identify those responsible for the drone sightings.
Frieden also revealed that “potentially larger drones” had been detected in Luxembourg’s airspace in recent days. He noted that while such incidents are novel for Luxembourg, neighboring countries have experienced similar detections. Unauthorized drones have previously been observed near sensitive locations in Belgium, Germany, and Denmark.
European governments have frequently warned about Russian-linked hybrid activities since the onset of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These activities have ranged from suspected sabotage and cyberattacks to unauthorized drone flights. However, Frieden stated there is currently no evidence pinpointing who is behind the Luxembourg sightings.
