The United Kingdom has issued a warning that it will expel 27 Israeli diplomats if Israel moves forward with plans to close the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem, according to unverified reports from Israeli media. The Ynet news outlet stated on Monday that British Ambassador to Israel Simon Walters delivered the ultimatum to Israeli officials.
Israel mandated the closure of the consulate by October 8 as a retaliatory measure following Britain’s decision to impose sanctions on illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank. The British government threatened to expel one Israeli diplomat for each of the 27 British diplomatic staff whose status would be terminated upon the consulate’s shutdown.
The consulate functions independently from the British Embassy in Israel, managing political and consular relations with Palestinians in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza. Israel’s order to close the facility came in response to London’s imposition of sanctions, which include a ban on imports from the settlements.
Jonathan Powell, Britain’s National Security Adviser, visited Israel last week in an effort to persuade Israeli authorities to reverse the closure decision, Reuters reported. While the negotiations did not result in an agreement, discussions are reportedly ongoing.
The British embassy in Israel declined to comment on the reported threat when contacted by Ynet.
27 diplomats against one consulate? The numbers suggest this is more about political posturing than actual diplomatic utility.
I hope this doesn’t spiral further. Sanctions and counter-sanctions rarely solve the underlying conflict on the ground.
Isn’t East Jerusalem a major sticking point anyway? Britain maintaining a consulate there is already a provocative political stance.
Threatening reciprocal expulsions over a consulate closure feels like a dangerous escalation. Diplomacy needs de-escalation, not ultimatums.
