Typhoon Dujuan has claimed at least six lives after unleashing torrential rain, catastrophic flooding, and landslides across Japan. The storm recently struck the Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures in eastern Japan, causing widespread disruption as it continues its trajectory toward Tokyo.
Emergency responders have been actively rescuing residents trapped by rising waters. In the city of Sakura, located in Chiba prefecture, firefighters were seen pushing life rafts through flooded streets to evacuate civilians. In one instance, rescuers carried an elderly woman to safety from a submerged area after the typhoon’s heavy rains overwhelmed the region.
The intense rainfall also triggered a mudslide in Miura, a town within Kanagawa prefecture, which approached a residential neighborhood. Visuals from the area showed vehicles partially submerged in floodwaters and streets turned into rivers, illustrating the severity of the deluge.
While the hardest hit has been the areas south and east of the capital, the effects of the storm were felt in Tokyo as well. Pedestrians were observed waiting at the famous Shibuya crossing under heavy downpours as the typhoon moved closer to the city.
Authorities have warned that rainfall amounts could potentially reach record-breaking levels as the system approaches the densely populated capital region, raising concerns about further escalation of the disaster.
