Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian drones targeted a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova in the southern Odesa region on Wednesday, killing at least two people and injuring three others. Governor Oleh Kiper confirmed the casualties near the Starokozache crossing, noting that the strike caused a large fire and temporarily halted passenger and vehicle traffic across the border.
The attack comes as Russia resumed near-constant air raids on Kyiv early Wednesday morning, just days after a brief pause during visits by US peace negotiators. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a drone strike damaged a 16-story residential building, though emergency services stated that no casualties were reported from the incident in the capital.
Simultaneously, Russian defense officials claimed their forces struck a Ukrainian cargo vessel carrying military equipment bound for the port of Odesa, as well as a warehouse in Kyiv allegedly linked to drone manufacturing. Ukraine’s defense ministry stated that Russian forces intercepted 596 Ukrainian drones overnight.
In southern Russia, four people were killed in Novorossiysk after drone debris fell on businesses and near an inhabited building. Ukrainian military officials confirmed the attack on the Black Sea port, stating that military vessels at the naval base were hit. Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, indicated that missile carriers were among the ships affected but did not specify the total number of vessels struck. Novorossiysk serves as a critical export hub for Russian oil, grain, and other commodities.
Earlier in the week, Russian airstrikes in Ukraine’s Mykolaiv region also resulted in one death and multiple injuries, damaging local port and civilian infrastructure.
