Trump Plans to Discuss Russian Plague Death with Putin Amid US Pressure for Transparency

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he intends to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin shortly regarding the reported death of a laboratory technician from plague, as American officials increase pressure on Moscow to provide greater transparency about the incident.

While Russian authorities have dismissed reports of anti-plague measures and downplayed an event at a Siberian institute last week, Washington has expressed growing concern. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking during a visit to Iceland, called on Russia to be open about the situation. “We encourage Russia to be transparent and share more information with the world so that all of us could react accordingly and appropriately,” Rubio stated. “Depending on what we learn about it, we would learn how to respond.”

Trump confirmed the upcoming discussion when approached by reporters at the White House. “I have a call scheduled, yes,” he said, adding that the conversation would take place “very soon.” According to the Wall Street Journal, the US State Department recently delivered a confidential diplomatic demarche to Moscow, warning that withholding details violates international health obligations.

Reports first emerged on Friday from the People of Baikal news outlet, which suggested that 28-year-old Darya Shipilova may have contracted pneumonic plague from a broken test tube. The publication claimed that up to 200 contacts were placed under quarantine. However, Russian health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor denied these claims, stating that the circulating document was unofficial and false.

Official investigations indicate the cause of death remains undetermined. Irkutsk Regional Governor Igor Kobzev stated Monday that tests found no microorganisms linked to the woman’s professional work, and postmortem examinations did not detect the disease. He noted that no other staff members at the institute have sought medical attention since her death.

The World Health Organization (WHO) released an update on Tuesday emphasizing that no cases of the disease had been recorded in Irkutsk. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed on X that “timely, complete and transparent information sharing” is essential to assess potential public health risks accurately.

The UN health agency described the risk level for Irkutsk as “moderate to low,” according to spokesman Christian Lindmeier in Geneva. Plague is a bacterial illness that can manifest in several forms, including pneumonic plague, which is highly contagious and potentially fatal without early treatment.

Although Trump stated on Monday that the US was ready to assist Russia if necessary, Moscow appeared to reject the offer. On Tuesday, the Russian watchdog highlighted worsening infectious disease issues within the United States, pointing to a surge in measles cases across three states and a fatal plague case in New Mexico earlier this year.

An international conference on plague and other infectious diseases is scheduled to take place in Irkutsk on October 21-22, though organizers maintain it is unrelated to the recent employee death.

  1. Quarantining 200 people and then saying it didn’t happen is a classic info-war tactic. Scary to think what we aren’t being told.

  2. I just hope this isn’t used as political leverage between Washington and Moscow instead of being treated as a genuine medical concern.

  3. Does anyone actually trust these denials? Withholding details on a potentially contagious disease violates basic public health ethics.

  4. If the WHO says no cases are recorded in Irkutsk, why is there a confidential demarche? The opacity is more alarming than the death itself.

  5. It’s quite the irony that Russia is pointing to US measles cases while facing international scrutiny over this incident. Geopolitics at its finest.
