Tropical Depression Nine Could Become Hurricane Isaias Before Hitting Gulf Coast

With the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season approaching its November 30th conclusion, meteorologists are tracking a developing weather system in the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center confirmed that Tropical Depression Nine formed on Tuesday and is currently moving over warm waters off the coast of Mexico. Forecasters anticipate the system will intensify into a tropical storm by early Wednesday and potentially reach hurricane strength by Thursday.

If the depression strengthens sufficiently to be classified as a tropical storm, it will be designated Isaias, pronounced “ees-ah-EE-ahs.” Should this occur, it would mark the ninth named storm of the season, which has been relatively quiet with only eight named systems recorded since June 1. This contrasts with the Pacific basin, where El Niño conditions are driving increased tropical activity.

While forecast models show some variance regarding the exact timing of landfall, there is growing consensus that the storm will track northward toward the Gulf Coast over the coming weekend. Even if the system fails to intensify beyond a depression, it is expected to deliver moderate to heavy rainfall across the Gulf region and parts of the Southeast from Saturday through early next week. Some long-range models suggest this moisture could eventually shift northward, affecting the Ohio Valley and the Northeast by midweek.

Significant uncertainty remains regarding the storm’s intensity and the severity of its impact on land. Model trajectories diverge on whether impacts will begin as early as Friday evening or develop later in the weekend, prompting officials to urge coastal communities to monitor updates closely.

The potential naming of the storm as Isaias carries historical weight within the Atlantic basin. Names beginning with the letter “I” have a notable history of being retired due to the devastation caused by storms such as Ian in 2022, Ida in 2021, Irma in 2017, and Irene in 2011. When Hurricane Ike was retired in 2008, Isaias was selected as its replacement on the rotating six-year list of tropical cyclone names.

  1. With El Nino boosting Pacific activity, why is the Atlantic staying so quiet until now? Feels unpredictable.
