During a high-stakes summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, tangible political, economic, or national security results have remained elusive. While the event featured an elaborate ceremonial welcome, concrete outcomes have yet to be disclosed.
Trump personally greeted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at Joint Base Andrews, where American service members presented a formal military welcome. The visit included a state dinner attended by prominent American business figures and Washington officials, followed by a tour of the White House and the National Archives.
During the tour, Trump showcased construction projects at the White House, including the ballroom and helipad. Xi expressed appreciation through a translator, stating that every detail of the visit was executed to a high standard of perfection.
At the conclusion of the visit, Trump described the interactions as “tremendous strides” beneficial to both nations, though he declined to provide specific details. He later echoed these sentiments on Truth Social, noting that the two leaders plan to meet again twice before the end of the year.
When questioned about the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Trump confirmed discussions took place and expressed optimism regarding progress in the Strait of Hormuz. David Perdue, the U.S. ambassador to China, stated on Fox News that Trump challenged Xi over China’s support for Iran, asserting that Beijing had committed to ceasing such assistance.
Discussions also touched on trade, with Trump hinting at positive developments for the agricultural sector without offering specifics. On the subject of technology, Trump encouraged Xi to adopt the term “super intelligence” rather than “artificial intelligence.” Chinese state media reported that Xi emphasized maintaining human control over AI development and adhering to a people-centered approach.
Despite the diplomatic cordiality, some Republican lawmakers maintained a critical stance. Senator John Hoeven stressed the need to press China on military and trade issues, while Senator Rick Scott criticized Xi’s role in the fentanyl crisis and military expansion.
So we spent millions on a fancy dinner and got nothing tangible? This feels like a lot of style with zero substance.
Great to see diplomacy happening, but I wish there were actual results instead of just vague praise and photo ops.
