Trump and Xi Hold ‘Productive’ Talks, Deferring Major AI Chip Decisions

United States President Donald Trump described recent discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping as “very productive” during the latter’s state visit to Washington, DC. Trump shared his optimism on his Truth Social platform on Friday, stating that “tremendous things will be happening,” although he did not elaborate on specific outcomes.

This marks Xi’s first visit to the United States in over ten years. During the engagement, the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) was prominent. Trump revealed that he had suggested to Xi that the term “Artificial Intelligence” be replaced with “Super Intelligence,” a phrase he noted was both more accurate and significant. The US President previously announced at the United Nations General Assembly that American government documents would officially adopt the term “super intelligence.”

The visit included a formal state dinner on Thursday attended by prominent technology figures, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who sat at the main table with the two leaders. Despite the friendly atmosphere, the US and China remain in a intense strategic competition regarding AI development. Both Trump and Xi have resisted pressure from segments of the American tech industry to decelerate innovation rates due to safety concerns.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer highlighted the logistical challenges in managing this rivalry, noting that many nations lack a dedicated AI department, making it difficult to establish clear lines of communication. He compared the need for a direct hotline to the “red zone” established between the Kremlin and the White House during the Cold War. Greer confirmed that another meeting between US and Chinese representatives on AI issues is scheduled within the next month.

However, significant restrictions remain in place. Greer told media outlets that the current negotiations did not address the sale of high-quality US-made chips that require government licenses. Describing these components as the “crown jewels of American technology” and essential for maintaining a lead in superintelligence, he stated that such conversations are effectively off the table for now.

On Friday, Trump accompanied Xi to the National Archives to view foundational American documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. As Xi’s three-day visit concludes, the two nations continue to project an image of diplomatic harmony. Nevertheless, observers note that no major breakthroughs were achieved regarding trade disputes or the regulatory framework for AI safety.
