US Supreme Court Blocks Voter Database Restrictions Before Midterms

The United States Supreme Court has prevented a federal appeals court’s preliminary injunction from blocking former President Donald Trump’s use of a sensitive voter database ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

In an order issued on Friday, the high court stayed the ruling from the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. That earlier decision had sought to prohibit the use of the database, which was compiled with the assistance of Elon Musk’s xAI, until the litigation was fully resolved.

The plaintiff in the case is Demos, a progressive advocacy group based in New York. The lawsuit argued that the deployment of the database, which contains detailed information on 219 million registered voters, poses a risk to voter privacy and data security.

Trump launched the initiative in July of this year. The project aimed to create one of the most comprehensive electoral profiles ever assembled, drawing on both public records and private sources.

The Supreme Court indicated that it would not issue a final decision on the matter until October, at which point it intends to hear oral arguments regarding the underlying legal dispute.

Despite the stay, the appeals court’s original order remains enforceable until the Supreme Court provides further guidance. This creates a temporary legal limbo where the database’s usage is restricted while the higher court prepares for final review.

The dispute highlights growing tensions between campaign data strategies and privacy advocates as Election Day approaches in November.
