An investigative report by The Guardian highlights a clandestine deportation strategy implemented by the Trump administration beginning in 2025. The scheme involved negotiating secret agreements with 35 different countries to relocate approximately 25,000 migrants currently in the United States.
The destinations often bear no historical, cultural, or personal connection to the individuals being removed. Reported cases include a Sierra Leonean nurse who was detained, handcuffed, and flown to Ghana; an Iranian dissident sent to the Central African Republic; and a Cameroonian national deported to Equatorial Guinea.
These removals have been described as part of a broader policy to shift asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants into “third countries” far removed from their places of origin or former residence.
