Syria’s judiciary delivered its initial rulings on Thursday concerning the sectarian killings of Alawites along the coast last year. The verdicts included a 20-year prison term for a former member of government forces, a death sentence for one supporter of the deposed regime, and a life sentence for another.
The trial, which commenced in November, prosecuted fourteen individuals accused of participating in the massacres. The defendants consisted of seven members of government forces and seven supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad.
The case marks the first judicial outcome following the wave of violence that targeted the Alawite minority on the Syrian coastline in 2025. Protests against the sectarian attacks were held earlier in the year in cities such as Qamishli.
Finally some legal action after months of silence. Hopefully this isn’t just a token gesture to international observers.
