Following Netflix’s decision to cancel the romantic drama “Sweet Magnolias,” creator and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson expressed gratitude for the show’s five-season run in a recent social media post.
“Living in Serenity for five seasons has been a privilege and a blessing,” Anderson wrote on Instagram on Saturday. She acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the series, praising the writers, cast, crew, executives, and producers for touching her heart and changing her life.
The showrunner also directed appreciation toward the audience, noting their passionate engagement with the characters. “Though our journey has sadly come to an end, I hope Serenity will always have a place in your heart. Keep pouring it out,” she added.
The streamer debuted the series in May 2020. Adapted from the book series by New York Times best-selling author Sherryl Woods, the drama starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley. Despite its cancellation, the show maintained strong viewership, ranking among Netflix’s Global Top 10 in more than 60 countries when its fifth and final season was announced in 2025.
Netflix described the series as a “comfort drama” centered on the lifelong friendship between Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen as they navigate relationships, family dynamics, and careers in the fictional South Carolina town of Serenity.
While “Sweet Magnolias” is concluding, Anderson and Swisher are preparing to collaborate on a new project. Netflix revealed that the duo will team up for a drama titled “Ladies of the House.” Anderson is set to serve as showrunner, while Swisher is expected to star and executive produce under their Rolling Clover banner, alongside Kate Gordon and executive producers at Black Label Media.
The new series follows the owner of a winery whose unexpected death forces his wife and two adult daughters to resolve their personal conflicts. Together, they must face challenges involving the business, their extended family, and romantic partners, ultimately learning to rely on one another to save the winery.
I just want a proper finale! Leaving us hanging after five seasons felt disrespectful to such passionate fans who loved these characters.
Wait, they cancelled it despite ranking in the Top 10 of sixty countries? That makes zero sense from a business standpoint.
So sad it ended, but glad they have a new project coming. The reunion of Sheryl and JoAnna is something to look forward to.
