Sweden Votes in Tight Election That Could See Far-Right Enter Government

Sweden is holding its 2026 parliamentary election in a race so narrow that recent polling indicates only a 0.3-point margin separates the left and right-wing blocs in Stockholm.

The outcome could result in either a new centre-left administration or, for the first time, the inclusion of the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) in government. This potential shift follows a pivotal moment in 2022, when current Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, leader of the centre-right Moderates, broke a long-standing political taboo by striking a deal with the SD to sustain his minority coalition.

That previous agreement granted the SD significant influence over key policy areas, particularly regarding crime and immigration. Kristersson has since signaled an expansion of that partnership, pledging ministerial positions to the Sweden Democrats if he secures a return to power.

  1. I find it hard to believe the SD is actually entering government. The mainstream parties must draw a line somewhere, surely?

  2. A three-point margin in Stockholm is razor-thin. This election will define Sweden’s political landscape for decades to come.
