Antonelli claims Spanish GP victory as Norris suffers VSC misfortune

Kimi Antonelli secured his eighth victory of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix, capitalizing on a critical error in timing that saw race leader Lando Norris lose his advantage. The Mercedes driver’s win tightens his hold on the Formula 1 championship, while Norris’s result was compounded by a slow pit stop and the inherent difficulties of overtaking at the new Madring circuit.

Norris, who started from pole position, appeared to be in control of the race, extending his lead to over six seconds before Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin suffered a brake failure at Turn 20. The incident triggered a virtual safety car (VSC) on lap 15, but the timing proved disastrous for the world champion. Norris had already passed the pit exit when the caution was called, whereas Antonelli and Max Verstappen were still on track and able to make their stops under reduced-speed conditions.

When Norris finally entered the pits, the VSC ended just before the pit lane entry, meaning he served his stop under green-flag conditions rather than the faster VSC pace. To add to his misery, McLaren’s crew struggled with both right-side wheels, resulting in a seven-second stop instead of the usual two. Norris re-emerged in fifth place, 6.3 seconds behind teammate George Russell.

Although Norris mounted a strong recovery, closing in on Verstappen in the final laps, the nature of the new track made passing nearly impossible. He came closest with two laps remaining when Verstappen navigated through lapped traffic, but the Dutchman held his line despite briefly cutting a chicane. Officials reviewed an incident regarding the corner cutting but took no action.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc stayed out on hard tires during the VSC period, hoping for a second caution to allow a cost-free stop, but none came. He was eventually forced to pit on lap 48 and finished fourth. George Russell, who started on hards and switched to mediums before being forced into another stop, managed only fifth place after a confused strategic battle with his team. Lewis Hamilton retired early due to brake failure.

The race highlighted significant issues with the new Madring layout. Drivers had warned that the circuit lacked viable overtaking spots, a prediction confirmed by the race outcome. There are now growing calls to redesign the track for the following year, including a longer straight and more substantial braking zones. Additionally, the expansive and fragmented paddock and pit complex has drawn criticism for its excessive length compared to other venues.

“It’s good to win but it doesn’t feel as good because Lando deserved to win,” Antonelli said. Norris remained optimistic despite the setback, stating, “We’ll take it on the chin. There could be more wins this year.”

Behind the top five, Liam Lawson secured sixth for Red Bull, ahead of Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who had been delayed by a front-wing issue following a first-lap collision with Russell. Arvid Lindblad claimed ninth for Racing Bulls, overtaking Nico Hulkenberg late in the race.
