Swansea City top the Championship as Vitor Matos urges continued focus

Swansea City have returned to the summit of the Championship following a hard-fought victory at Lincoln City, a result that prompted head coach Vitor Matos to briefly acknowledge his team’s standing despite his usual reluctance to discuss league positions.

Matos, who has spent the past ten months deflecting questions about the table to emphasize performance and progression, conceded that the current situation provides “a good feeling” for everyone involved. Speaking after the match, he added: “I think it’s a feeling that we are taking the right steps. What we need to do [now] is keep focused.”

The win at Sincil Bank was particularly significant, as Swansea overcame a direct and physical challenge from Lincoln to secure all three points. Moussa Yeo scored his second goal in as many games to seal the comeback, marking another instance of resilience from a side that has already produced two victory-from-behind performances this season.

This success follows a defeat to Southampton that briefly handed the league lead to their rivals, and it extends Swansea’s impressive away record, which now stands at three wins from four matches on the road. While the 3-1 loss at St Mary’s was tough to take, the subsequent triumphs against Burnley, Stoke City, and Lincoln demonstrate the squad’s adaptability.

Goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux continues to be a standout performer, having conceded only six goals in the division so far—the best defensive record in the Championship. He was instrumental in neutralizing Lincoln’s attacks after the opening penalty, awarded via a controversial decision by referee Anthony Backouse, allowed the hosts to level the score.

Matos highlighted the high concentration levels required to deal with set-pieces and second balls, noting that the performance showcased the team’s character. “I think it was a performance where we showed character, we showed how we want to compete in this type of game and of course it’s an important win for us,” he said.

The Swansea squad boasts depth across the pitch. In midfield, Stephen Eustaquio has added quality since his summer arrival from Porto, scoring the winner at Lincoln—the Portuguese midfielder’s first goal for the club. He is supported by a dynamic unit including Marko Stamenic, Goncalo Franco, Melker Widell, and Jay Fulton.

Up front, Swansea have options in abundance. Zan Vipotnik, last season’s top scorer in the division, has been supplemented by the in-form Adam Idah, while Ross Stewart remains a hope for the future despite being currently sidelined by injury. Stewart, a proven Championship performer, is targeted to return for the match against Norwich City on October 10, though his current form may see him wait his turn given the standards set by Idah and the rest of the attacking line.

As the league pauses for an elongated international break, Swansea can reflect on a strong start to the 2026-27 campaign. Having avoided the drop last season under Matos, the Swans now carry belief that they can break a streak of five consecutive mid-table finishes and challenge for promotion.
