South Korea Demands Apology from Ukraine Over Leaked POW Transfer Details

South Korea has formally requested an apology from Ukraine following the public revelation that two North Korean soldiers, captured while fighting for Moscow, were transferred to Seoul. The disclosure, made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a speech at the United Nations, has triggered a significant diplomatic rift between the two nations.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung issued a stern warning on Friday, stating that Seoul would implement “further measures” if Kyiv fails to issue a public apology. President Lee also alleged that Ukrainian actions had forced him into a position where he appeared to be a liar, expressing deep regret over the breach of confidentiality just hours after Zelenskyy’s address last week.

Seoul’s primary concern centers on national security and the safety of the soldiers’ families. Authorities warned that the premature disclosure could expose the relatives of the two prisoners in North Korea to retaliation from Pyongyang. While South Korea asserts that Kyiv violated a prior agreement to keep the transfer confidential to protect the individuals involved, Ukrainian officials have denied that any such secret arrangement existed.

In an effort to de-escalate the situation, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the dispute as a “diplomatic misunderstanding” rather than a full-blown incident. Speaking to journalists, Sybiha emphasized the importance South Korea holds for Ukraine and expressed hope for continued cooperation and concrete results in their bilateral relationship.

  1. Both sides claiming a secret agreement that never happened? Classic diplomatic blame game. Nobody is backing down.

  2. I never thought I’d see Seoul and Kyiv at odds like this. The family safety angle is genuinely terrifying.
