Sony Pictures is currently in talks to acquire the rights to a major motion picture adaptation of Electronic Arts’ popular “Battlefield” video game series, emerging as the frontrunner after a competitive multi-studio bidding war. The deal involves filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie and actor Michael B. Jordan, though Sony declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations.
McQuarrie is attached to oversee the project as writer, director, and producer, while Jordan will serve as an executive producer. The freshly crowned Best Actor Oscar winner is also being considered for the lead role, although his casting remains contingent upon several unresolved factors. Joining the production team are notable industry figures including Jesse Stern from Electronic Arts, Carter Swan from Emerald Neon, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo, and Elizabeth Raposo, president of Outlier Society.
The “Battlefield” franchise, which debuted in 2002 with the World War II-themed title “Battlefield 1942,” has built a reputation for large-scale online multiplayer combat between opposing military factions. Over two decades, the series expanded to cover historical events, alternate histories, and futuristic conflicts. The most recent installment, “Battlefield 6,” released last year as the 18th entry in the series, is set between 2027 and 2028 and features a narrative centered on a conflict between a fractured NATO and a private military company. The game became the highest-selling first-person shooter of the year and the best-performing title in the franchise’s history, surpassing Activision’s “Call of Duty.”
Meanwhile, competition for video game adaptations remains fierce, with Paramount Pictures preparing its own “Call of Duty” film directed by Peter Berg and written by Taylor Sheridan, currently scheduled for a June 30, 2028 theatrical release.
For McQuarrie, “Battlefield” represents his next directorial venture following his work on “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which reportedly concludes Tom Cruise’s tenure as Ethan Hunt. He is also slated to direct Arnold Schwarzenegger in “King Conan” and is collaborating with Cruise on an upcoming space thriller directed by Doug Liman.
Jordan continues to expand his portfolio within the video game adaptation space. He previously starred as Navy SEAL John Clark in Amazon’s “Without Remorse” and has been developing a “Rainbow Six” film project. His upcoming slate includes starring in, directing, and producing Amazon MGM Studios’ reimagining of “The Thomas Crown Affair,” hitting theaters March 5, 2027, as well as playing Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs opposite Austin Butler’s James “Sonny” Crockett in Universal’s “Miami Vice ’85.” McQuarrie is represented by CAA, while Jordan’s representation includes 1v1 Entertainment, WME, Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole, and 2PM Sharp.
Michael B. Jordan producing AND starring seems like a lot. Hope he isn’t just buying the rights to fund his career pivot.
Christopher McQuarrie directing a Battlefield movie? That actually sounds promising for once.
