A forthcoming documentary by Eleanor Coppola offers an insider look at the production of her daughter Sofia’s 2006 punk-infused hit, Mary Antoinette. To celebrate the film’s release, Sofia Coppola is set to take questions from the public.
Sofia Coppola’s relationship with the camera dates back to her earliest years. As the youngest child and only daughter of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola and documentarian Eleanor Coppola, she was immersed in filmmaking from birth. She appeared in all three installments of the Godfather saga, beginning as an infant during a baptism scene in the 1972 original, appearing on a steamboat in 1974’s Godfather Part II, and portraying Mary Corleone at age 19 in the 1990 sequel, Godfather Part III.
Beyond the iconic franchise, she accumulated numerous small roles in her father’s projects throughout the 1980s. These appearances included parts in The Outsiders (1983), Rumble Fish (1983), The Cotton Club (1984), and Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), where she played the younger sister of Kathleen Turner’s character.
Her presence also extended to the music video world during the 1990s. She portrayed a frenzied Joan Crawford in Sonic Youth’s 1990 clip for Mildred Pierce, starred as a troubled drifter in the Black Crowes’ 1992 Sometimes Salvation, and appeared as one of Madonna’s companions in the 1992 video Deeper and Deeper. Additionally, she played an injured gymnast in the Chemical Brothers’ 1997 song Elektrobank, which was directed by her then-boyfriend Spike Jonze.
