Seth Green disclosed that he was excluded from conversations regarding a return to the franchise during a September 8 appearance on the podcast “The McBride Rewind.” The actor, who portrayed werewolf guitarist Oz in the original series, stated he was not contacted about reprising his character for Hulu’s planned reboot.
“I was not part of those talks,” Green said. However, he clarified that the door remains open should the producers reach out. “If they wrote an Oz story, I’d love to see where Oz is right now,” he added.
The canceled project, titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,” was set to star Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the next Slayer, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning as the original Buffy Summers. The pilot also featured Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel di Tomasso, and Jack Cutmore-Scott in supporting roles.
Gellar announced the cancellation of the series via Instagram, expressing her disappointment. She thanked director Chloé Zhao for bringing her back to the role, stating, “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward.” She added that despite the cancellation, her affection for the project and its creator remained unchanged.
The original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series, which ran from 1997 to 2003 and starred Gellar, was cancelled after its pilot was produced for Hulu in March 2025. Representatives for Hulu and 20th Century did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
