Eugene Richard O’Connor, widely recognized by his stage name Cheetah Chrome and celebrated as a foundational guitarist for the punk group the Dead Boys, died on Sunday at the age of 71. The announcement was made by his former bandmates via an Instagram post.
In their tribute, the band described Chrome as “a true original” and “an architect of the punk rock movement.” They highlighted his aggressive musical style, noting his “feral guitar riffs and manic energy” that significantly impacted the music scene. The statement also emphasized his kind personality, expressing deep condolences to his family, friends, and global fanbase while requesting privacy.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, and later based in Nashville, Tennessee, O’Connor began his professional career in 1974 as a guitarist for Rocket from the Tombs. He subsequently formed the band Frankenstein alongside fellow Dead Boys members Stiv Bators and Johnny Blitz. The group soon adopted the name Dead Boys and achieved notable success with their debut album, “Young, Loud and Snotty,” released in 1977, followed by “We Have Come for Your Children” in 1978.
Although the band disbanded in 1979, they reunited intermittently for live performances in subsequent years but did not release additional studio recordings. In recognition of the 50th anniversary of their debut, the group had organized plans to tour the album in 2027.
O’Connor is survived by his wife, Anna O’Connor, and their 14-year-old son, Rogan, who live in Nashville.
Wait, they were touring Young, Loud and Snotty in 2027? That would have been perfect timing right before he passed.
Such a massive loss for punk rock history. His riffs were absolutely legendary and shaped so much of the genre.
