Seattle Mountain Rescue Tests Exoskeletons to Boost Wilderness Search Capabilities

Members of the Seattle Mountain Rescue team have begun venturing into the rugged terrain of the US Pacific Northwest equipped with a novel technological aid: powered devices mounted to their hips and legs. These assistive machines are currently undergoing testing to determine if they can significantly improve rescuers’ speed and stamina during critical missions, such as locating stranded individuals.

The equipment is engineered to augment lower-body strength, proving particularly useful when navigating steep climbs or hauling heavy loads. Such capabilities are vital in emergency situations where every moment counts.

These types of devices are known as human exoskeletons. They function by attaching to specific areas of the body to construct an external mechanical framework, often referred to as an “exo.” This powered structure is designed to amplify the physical abilities of the wearer, marking a potential new era for wearable assistance in demanding environments.

  1. I’ve used hip exoskeletons at construction sites. They help with lifting, but hiking? Totally different story.

  2. Finally! I have bad knees, so this tech would make volunteering for mountain rescue actually feasible for me.
