iPhone Duo vs. iPad Mini: A Guide to Choosing Between Apple’s Newest Devices

The decision between the iPhone Duo and the iPad Mini hinges largely on cost, given the massive gap between the two devices. The iPad Mini is positioned as a more accessible option, with the 128GB model starting at $600 and the 512GB version reaching $900. Buyers opting for cellular connectivity will need to pay an additional $150. In contrast, the iPhone Duo carries a premium price tag, beginning at $2,000 for 256GB of storage and climbing to $3,200 for the top-tier 2TB model. To put that difference into perspective, a consumer could purchase a new 256GB iPhone 18 Pro for $1,200 alongside an iPad Mini and still spend less than the cost of a single Duo. Due to these significant financial implications, experts advise potential buyers to test the Duo in person at an Apple Store before committing.

Under the hood, the Duo holds a performance advantage over the Mini. It is powered by an A20 Pro chip, whereas the iPad Mini utilizes an A17 Pro processor. The Duo also features a seven-core GPU and 12GB of RAM, surpassing the Mini’s five-core GPU and 8GB of memory. Furthermore, the Duo offers a superior camera system with both a 48-megapixel main sensor and an ultra-wide lens, compared to the Mini’s single 12-megapixel wide camera. However, for users who already own a smartphone with a high-quality camera, this imaging upgrade may not be a decisive factor.

Display characteristics also differ between the two devices. The iPad Mini boasts a larger 8.3-inch screen, while the Duo features a slightly smaller 7.6-inch inner display. Despite the size difference, both of the Duo’s screens are equipped with ProMotion technology capable of reaching 120Hz, whereas the Mini’s display is limited to 60Hz.

Software experience and accessory support are additional considerations. The iPad Mini runs iPadOS, which provides robust multitasking capabilities, while the Duo, despite its unique form factor, does not offer the same level of flexibility and can generally only support one app per half of the inner screen. For users heavily reliant on the Apple Pencil, compatibility is also limited; the Duo only supports the USB-C version of the pencil, not the Pencil Pro. Additionally, this support will not be available at launch but is expected to arrive later in 2026.

  1. The A20 Pro chip sounds impressive, but $3,200? That’s a whole laptop in there somewhere. What exactly am I paying extra for?

  2. Wait, it only supports one app per screen? That feels like a gimmick, not an innovation. Is multitasking really gone?

  3. Two grand for a phone is absolutely absurd. I’d rather have the iPhone 18 Pro and save enough for a nice dinner.
