Scuffles Erupt as Police Escort Migrants Ashore in Gosport

Approximately 150 anti-migration demonstrators gathered in Gosport, Hampshire, on Sunday evening to obstruct the arrival of migrants who had crossed the English Channel. The standoff at a local marina continued into the early hours of Monday, resulting in flares being discharged and several physical altercations between protesters and law enforcement.

The Home Office confirmed that 149 individuals were rescued in mid-Channel by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in coordination with a French vessel. Following their arrival in Gosport, the group was transported by coach to a processing center in Kent. Authorities noted this marks the second recent instance of large-scale migrant landings occurring this far west along the southern coast.

While a police cordon was established along Haslar Road and the general atmosphere remained largely orderly, some demonstrators physically blocked police vans from moving forward while chanting slogans such as “deport the lot.” In response, Hampshire Police invoked powers under the Public Order Act and prohibited the wearing of face coverings to manage the crowd.

A Home Office spokesperson emphasized that the Border Security Command monitors the Channel continuously and stated it is “vital we continue to detain, check and process every small boat arrival.” Ship tracking data suggests the dinghy departed from near Utah Beach in Normandy on Sunday morning.

This incident represents the third crossing of the month. For the year so far, 19,451 people have been recorded making Channel crossings in small boats. This figure represents a 43% decrease compared to the same period last year and is 23% lower than the count at this stage in 2024.

The event follows similar unrest last month in Eastney, Portsmouth, where over 100 migrants landed, leading to clashes between police and demonstrators. Those individuals were subsequently transferred by sea to Dover.

4 responses to “Scuffles Erupt as Police Escort Migrants Ashore in Gosport”

  1. Face coverings banned to manage crowds, but will it actually stop the next scuffle? Seems like a superficial fix for a deeper issue.

  2. Has anyone else noticed these landings are getting further west? Gosport this time, Eastney last month. Where is the pattern heading?

  3. I was genuinely surprised by the flare usage. Things escalated so quickly from chanting to physical altercations near the marina.

  4. The 43% drop in crossings is statistically significant, yet the clashes continue. Something isn’t adding up with public sentiment.
