New Zealand’s Heaviest Insect Shows Signs of Recovery Through Breeding Programme

Conservationists in New Zealand are reporting positive outcomes from an innovative breeding initiative aimed at saving the wētāpunga, an endemic species recognized as the heaviest insect on the planet. The population, which faced severe declines due to habitat destruction and introduced predators, is now officially classified as recovering.

The project has successfully reintroduced 11,000 individuals into their natural habitats. Dr. Chris Green, an honorary researcher with the Department of Conservation, expressed optimism regarding the species’ outlook, stating that the future for the wētāpunga appears promising.

Green, who studied the programme’s results, co-authored a report published on October 2 in the New Zealand Journal of Zoology. The paper details the significant achievements of the breeding effort, which has helped stabilize numbers of the large, mouse-sized insects that are iconic to the region’s ecosystem.
