Researchers from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group have concluded that climate change played a central role in the catastrophic glacial mountain collapse that struck Nepal and Tibet last month. The disaster, triggered by a massive section of rock and glacier breaking away from Langtang Lirung on August 26, has resulted in a combined death toll of 1,446, with at least 6,669 people still missing.
In a report titled “Rapid Warming in the Himalaya Exacerbates Geohazard Cascades Beyond Adaptation Limits,” the WWA described the event not as an isolated extreme weather incident, but as a “compound crisis.” The analysis indicates that long-term warming, retreating glaciers, thawing permafrost, and inherent geological instability converged to cause the devastation.
Walter Immerzeel, a mountain hydrologist at Utrecht University and co-author of the study, noted that the region is experiencing “fundamental, irreversible shifts.” He explained that relentless warming has raised the altitude of the freezing threshold in the high Himalayas, exposing ice and permafrost within bedrock to prolonged higher temperatures. This process weakens mountain slopes, making them more prone to collapse.
The study highlighted that July and August were the warmest months on record for the area locally, with temperatures approximately 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal. These extreme heat conditions followed heavy snowfall in late 2025, which contributed to increased meltwater prior to the collapse. Additionally, the report suggested that a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Nepal in 2015 may have further compromised slope stability, although its exact contribution remains uncertain.
Nepal, a rural nation of 30 million people, is responsible for a minimal share of global greenhouse gas emissions compared to industrialized countries. Despite this, the country faces severe consequences. Prime Minister Balendra Shah plans to raise the issue of climate justice and compensation at the United Nations General Assembly next week during his first foreign trip as leader.
Friederike Otto, a professor of climate science at Imperial College London, emphasized the implications for global policy. “There is no doubt that climate change is one of the drivers, and therefore obviously it needs to be discussed in the context of loss and damage,” she told reporters.
On the ground, the human toll continues to mount. Nepal’s disaster authority revised the number of missing persons upward to 6,150 on Wednesday following data collection and verification in affected districts. Of the 1,403 bodies recovered, only 105 have been identified. In China, state media reports 43 deaths and 519 missing individuals.
Nepal estimates that reconstruction efforts following the floods will cost $4.78 billion, raising urgent questions about the limits of adaptation in vulnerable Himalayan communities.
