Saudi Arabia has issued a stark warning to Iran-backed Houthi militants following the interception of a drone in the vicinity of Mecca. The Saudi-led military coalition reported that its air defenses shot down the unmanned aircraft south of the holy city on Tuesday, preventing it from entering restricted airspace.
Turki al-Malki, a spokesperson for the coalition, emphasized on Wednesday that the protection of Islam’s two holiest sites and the safety of pilgrims constitute a “red line.” He stated that the coalition reserves the right to take necessary deterrent measures against future attacks by the Houthis.
The militant group, which is engaged in conflict with Saudi forces in Yemen, rejected allegations that it intended to target Mecca. Meanwhile, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has formally condemned the incident, citing concerns over regional stability and religious sanctity.
