Samantha Morton Reflects on Music, Raving, and Collaboration with Richard Russell at Green Man

During the Guardian Live ‘Honest Playlist’ event held in the Talking Shop tent at the Green Man Festival, actress and musician Samantha Morton shared insights into her musical journey. While currently captivating audiences as Circe in ‘The Odyssey,’ Morton emphasized her enduring passion for music, noting that she often feels underrepresented in conversations about the subject.

Morton, who collaborated with XL Recordings boss Richard Russell on her 2024 solo album ‘Daffodils & Dirt,’ performed later that day with Russell’s supergroup, Everything Is Recorded. She also contributed the title track for ‘The Odyssey’ soundtrack. The discussion touched upon her formative years in Nottingham and the influence of the local free-party culture.

For the session, Morton curated a selection of tracks significant to her life, ranging from Musical Youth’s ‘Pass The Dutchie’ to Art of Noise’s ‘Moments In Love.’ She revealed that she frequently creates playlists to aid her character preparation and used to carry cassette tapes in her pocket to ensure she was always surrounded by quality music.
