Warwickshire have moved a significant step closer to securing a ninth County Championship title after Sam Hain’s masterful century guided them to a dominant position on the second day of their Division One fixture against Leicestershire at Edgbaston.
On a pitch offering assistance to seamers, Hain displayed exceptional technique and patience, scoring 142 runs from 301 balls. The innings marked his 21st first-class century and was crucial in extending the Bears’ lead to 247 runs.
Resuming their innings on 130-4 with a five-run advantage, Warwickshire added 51 more runs without loss before bad light intervened. Hain and captain Ed Barnard, who scored 88, then established a robust 165-run partnership for the fifth wicket in 50 overs.
Barnard fell 12 runs short of his own century, edging a drive from Ben Green, while Chris Woakes provided quick support with his second ball before Kai Smith and Manny Suthar offered brief cameos. Hain was eventually dismissed but not before the home crowd gave him a standing ovation for his performance. He became the only player to reach 1,000 first-class runs this season for the second time in his career.
Leicestershire, bowled out for 125 in their first innings, showed resilience in their second attempt. Sol Budinger top-scored with an unbeaten 43 off 36 balls, but Warwickshire seamer Ethan Bamber struck twice in three balls to leave the visitors reeling at 55-3. Bamber’s season tally now stands at 66 wickets.
Warwickshire currently trail Leicestershire by 192 runs in the standings, with the Bears holding 6 points to the Foxes’ 3. A draw on the final day would be sufficient for Warwickshire to claim the title, though fans anticipate a decisive session to seal the championship outright.
Sixty-six wickets for Bamber is incredible. The Bears are dominating every facet of the game right now.
Ben Green must be heartbroken after breaking that partnership. Leicestershire simply cannot contain this batting lineup.
