Russia Vows Escalation Against Kyiv Following Mass Drone Attack on Moscow

Russia has announced it will heighten its military operations against Kyiv in retaliation for a large-scale Ukrainian drone campaign targeting the Moscow region. The attack, which occurred on the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections, resulted in at least two fatalities and marked the most significant strike on the Russian capital since the invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that the army would “continue and intensify its high-accuracy strikes against military targets in Kyiv” in response to what it described as the Kyiv regime’s attacks on civilian areas within Russia.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, the assault involved approximately 1,600 drones, with 450 directed specifically at the capital. Visual evidence from the scene revealed significant damage, including a large breach in a multi-story residential building on Moscow’s outskirts and heavy black smoke emanating from what appeared to be an oil refinery.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commended the operation, noting that long-range responses had a “very significant impact” in the Moscow region. He confirmed the deployment of new weaponry, including domestically produced Flamingo cruise missiles and the Pelican, which sources identified as a winged drone rather than the short-range ballistic missile initially suspected.

The drone strikes coincided with Russia’s legislative elections, which were tightly controlled and devoid of meaningful opposition. Preliminary data from the Central Election Commission indicated that the ruling United Russia party secured nearly 58% of the vote based on results from 58% of polling stations. The ballot also included residents of four Ukrainian regions illegally annexed by Moscow after the war’s outset, as well as Crimea, which Kyiv and the European Union have condemned as a violation of international law.

Amid the escalating hostilities, Zelenskyy reported that he had held discussions with US President Donald Trump. The two leaders agreed to meet in New York during the upcoming UN General Assembly, aiming to discuss de-escalation measures and address critical security concerns such as energy, food security, and human protection. Zelenskyy suggested these talks could significantly alter the trajectory of the conflict.

Meanwhile, European intelligence officials have warned of a potential imminent test of NATO’s collective defense clause. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk previously informed parliament that intelligence assessments suggest Russia may launch drone or missile attacks on NATO territory within months, aiming to demonstrate that Article 5 is “more theoretical than practical.”

The violence has continued to exact a heavy toll on Ukrainian civilians. Kyiv regional authorities reported that an overnight Russian attack killed four people, including three children. A mother and her two three-year-old twins were killed when a drone struck a private home, while another young girl died in the hospital following a separate strike in a different district. Kyiv region governor Tymur Tkachenko stated that the area endured sustained hostile attacks throughout the day.

In a separate development regarding global food supply chains, Egypt announced it is diversifying its wheat imports away from Ukraine and Russia toward France and other European suppliers. Supply Minister Sherif Farouk confirmed the shift, citing disruptions to traditional supply routes.
