US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has landed in Reykjavik, Iceland, commencing a four-day diplomatic tour across Europe that includes stops in Greece and Portugal. According to a statement from the Department of State, discussions with Icelandic officials on Monday will prioritize economic partnerships and security collaboration.
Before departing, Rubio addressed questions regarding the recent decision to return B-1 bombers to the United States from the Royal Air Force base at Fairford in the UK. He explicitly stated he would not draw a direct line between this strategic redeployment and last week’s security incident at the base.
“I wouldn’t just directly tie that to the move that was made,” Rubio told reporters. He added that the Department of War is continuously reallocating resources based on operational needs. The secretary expressed confidence in the security protocols at all US installations and commended British authorities for their cooperation.
The comments follow the arrest of five British men near the Fairford airbase on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. A sixth suspect, a dual UK-Iranian national apprehended separately in London, has also been released on bail. The B-1 bombers stationed at Fairford had previously been utilized for strikes against Iran.
Despite Rubio’s reassurances, a NATO military source indicated that Iran continues to pose an acute threat to US assets in the United Kingdom. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had previously designated the Fairford base as a legitimate target, though Tehran denied any involvement in the recent incident.
Following his visit to Iceland, Rubio will travel to Greece to head the US delegation for the sixth US-Greece Strategic Dialogue, with a focus on defense cooperation, regional stability, and energy security. His tour will conclude in Lisbon, Portugal, where he plans to discuss advancements in defense, economic ties, and technology.
Rubio’s deflection is classic. Deployments shift for many reasons, but ignoring the timing here feels tone-deaf to local concerns.
Seems convenient to downplay the link. The bombers were literally targeting Iran, and now suspects are arrested nearby. Coincidence?
