Rob Lowe has provided a significant update regarding the long-awaited sequel to the 1985 coming-of-age classic “St. Elmo’s Fire.” Speaking during a recent appearance on the talk show “Watch What Happens Live,” the actor confirmed that the project is actively progressing and that a screenplay is already being developed.
“It is definitely in the works, for sure,” Lowe stated when asked about the current status of the film. He added, “All of us actors want to do it, and we’re supposed to get a draft of the script the first week of October.” This announcement offers the most concrete timeline yet for the sequel, which has been in various stages of development since it was first proposed in 2024.
The original film, directed by Joel Schumacher and co-written by Schumacher and Carl Kurlander, featured a ensemble cast including Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, and Judd Nelson. While previous attempts to adapt the story into an NBC television series stalled earlier in the decade, focus has now returned to a big-screen continuation of the story. Lowe noted earlier this year that he had met with the studio and that discussions had been ongoing for several months, describing the process as being in its very early stages at the time.
Fellow cast member Demi Moore previously indicated that conversations were active and that Sony, the studio behind the original 1985 release, was supportive of the initiative. She noted that the studio was looking for the right writing partner to craft the sequel. With the latest confirmation from Lowe that a script draft is imminent, fans of the classic film may soon see a new chapter added to the story of its iconic characters.
