2026 VMAs Draw Record 8.4 Million Viewers on CBS and MTV

CBS and MTV recorded a combined audience of 8.43 million viewers for the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, marking the most-watched edition of the ceremony in 11 years. According to Nielsen Live+same day fast nationals, this figure represents a 51% increase over last year’s show, which drew 5.60 million viewers.

Individual network performance showed that the CBS telecast averaged 7.61 million viewers, a 52% jump from the previous year. MTV’s simulcast attracted 686,000 viewers, while an encore broadcast on MTV reached 142,000 people. The surge in viewership was partially attributed to a delay in start times caused by an NFL football game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Dallas Cowboys, which pushed the VMAs to 7:51 p.m. ET. As a result, the CBS broadcast was tape-delayed, whereas the local premiere in Los Angeles remained at 4:30 p.m. PT inside the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live.

The awards ceremony featured a notable lineup of performances, including Madonna, who performed for the first time at the VMAs in 23 years, joined by Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX. Taylor Swift won the video of the year award and premiered her new music video, “Patient Zero.” Additionally, Nirvana received the video vanguard award, and tributes were paid to Dolly Parton and George Michael.

Snoop Dogg hosted the event, which was produced by Gunpowder & Sky. Demographic data indicated strong viewership among younger audiences, with the show reaching its highest numbers in the 18-34 and 18-49 age brackets since 2020 and 2018, respectively. Social media engagement also increased, with 31.1 million interactions and 159 million video views, an 8% rise from the previous year.
