Retroid is entering the growing market for dual-screen retro gaming consoles with a device codenamed the Pocket Duo. The company recently released a teaser video showcasing a dark silhouette of the upcoming hardware, though it revealed no specific details regarding specifications, pricing, or a launch date.
The handheld maker brings significant experience to the clamshell format through previous releases such as the Retroid Pocket 6 and the Pocket Flip 2, which features a 5.5-inch OLED display. Analysts suggest that Retroid’s existing roadmap should allow the Pocket Duo to remain competitive against other devices currently available on the market.
Regarding internal hardware, Retroid may utilize a powerful processor similar to the Qualcomm QCS8550 found in its recently launched Pocket Nova. That chipset is capable of emulating titles from the Nintendo DS, 3DS, and Switch libraries. Additionally, while Retroid previously offered a Dual Screen Add-on that attaches a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen to other models, the new Pocket Duo appears to feature a standalone, cable-free design.
Pricing expectations place the device between the entry-level Anbernic RG DS, starting at $100, and the premium Ayaneo Pocket DS, which costs at least $579. Given the inclusion of two displays, the Pocket Duo is anticipated to be priced higher than the Pocket Nova, which starts at $239, potentially positioning it as a direct competitor to the Ayn Thor.
