Researchers have released data from a pivotal late-stage clinical trial for retatrutide, a new obesity medication expected to be the most potent treatment available. The findings align with high expectations, revealing that patients on the highest dose shed an average of 25% of their body weight over 80 weeks. This figure rose to an average of 30% after the trial was extended to 104 weeks. In total, over a third of participants receiving retatrutide achieved weight loss of 30% or more.
Beyond weight reduction, the drug demonstrated notable benefits for various obesity-related health issues. Among participants suffering from obesity-linked knee osteoarthritis, knee pain decreased by as much as 62%. For those with obesity-linked obstructive sleep apnea, the frequency of breathing disruptions dropped by up to 57%. Additionally, retatrutide improved broader cardiometabolic markers, including blood pressure, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol levels.
The trial, which commenced in 2023, enrolled 2,339 individuals across 131 clinical sites in 11 countries. Participants were divided into four groups of roughly equal size, receiving either 4 mg, 9 mg, or 12 mg of retatrutide, or a placebo. The average starting weight was approximately 113 kg (250 lbs), with an average BMI of 40. Subgroup analyses included 574 participants with knee osteoarthritis and 243 with obstructive sleep apnea. Notably, more than a third of the trial participants had prediabetes at the outset, and this condition resolved in over 90% of those affected by the study’s conclusion.
