Red Bull deploys AI agent to guide Max Verstappen’s split-second race decisions

Oracle Red Bull Racing has integrated an artificial intelligence system into its operations to assist engineers and strategists in making critical, split-second decisions during Formula 1 events. The development highlights a growing trend of major technology companies partnering with racing teams to enhance on-track performance.

Jack Harington, head of technical and performance partnerships at Oracle Red Bull Racing, told CNBC that the team developed the AI-powered strategy agent to help interpret F1 regulations and analyze past rulings. While the system began as a search tool, it has evolved into an agentic AI capable of drawing from a wide array of information sources to recommend actions in real time.

“It’s actually making decisions for us,” Harington said, emphasizing the tool’s proactive capabilities. He cited a scenario from the 2025 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where driver Max Verstappen cut a corner while defending his position. The AI advised the team to concede the spot to avoid a potential penalty. Although the suggestion conflicted with competitive instincts, Red Bull complied; Verstappen subsequently overtook his rival after regaining the position legally.

Harington stressed that the technology is designed to augment, not replace, human expertise. “Formula One is and will always be a human sport,” he noted, adding that AI helps engineers manage the numerous variables present in F1, from track dynamics to championship standings.

The move aligns with similar strategies by other industry giants. Google is collaborating with McLaren to integrate its Gemini AI tools, while Mercedes-AMG Petronas has partnered with Microsoft to leverage AI and cloud technology for performance analysis. Ferrari is working with IBM to create AI-driven fan experiences.

The technology came to fruition amidst a successful weekend for the team in Singapore. Verstappen secured his first-ever Singapore Grand Prix victory, marking his 73rd career win. Mechanics celebrated on the pit wall as he crossed the finish line at the Marina Bay Street Circuit on October 11, 2026.

  1. The Monza example is fascinating. Using AI to interpret past rulings instead of just raw data is a smart evolution for teams.

  2. Wait, did the AI actually tell Max to give up a spot? That sounds risky. Would you trust a machine with your career?

  3. Crazy that AI is now deciding racing strategy. I hope it doesn’t make the sport feel too robotic and soulless!
